Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
