In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
